Az 1 Promotionz interview Epoch Failure
November 30, 2013
Epoch Failure is not your average music duo. From the sound they give to the inspirations that drive them. They took the time to talk with Az 1 Promotionz about who they are, music, and what keeps them grounded.
Az 1 Promo: Who is Epoch Failure?
Epoch Failure: Epoch (pronounced like "epic") Failure is an urban pop duo from New Jersey, resulting from the collaborative efforts of singer/producer Billy Joe Marrero (Billy The Kidd) and rapper Nick Young (Nickey Knoxx).
Billy the Kidd (E.F.): - Epoch Failure is the voice for everyone who has stumbled or fallen, but still had the heart to stand back up and get back in the ring. We're the voice for people who know they might not be where other folks believe they should be, but know they're exactly where they're supposed to be. We're there for the kids that like to party, the kids that are more in their heads, the kids that are confident, and the kids that are insecure. 'Cause at some point we've been and/or still are all those people. And we try to touch all these phases of life in a fun and sincere way.
Az 1 Promo: As an urban pop duo you have a very different sound. What inspired you both to come together?
Knoxx (E.F.): I was doing the solo thing as a rapper and Billy was doing his solo thing as a singer, and his cousin introduced us about 5 years ago. It's been a great friendship/partnership/bromance ever since lol. In the beginning, we shared a place together for almost two years and in that time we cranked out some great songs. Our sound is all about experimenting and stepping out of that hip hop mind frame and comfort zone. We borrow production elements from electronic music, hip hop, and pop and then blend it into something now known as the Epoch Failure sound. Billy is a true musician, playing 8 instruments and singing, so we can rock with a live band or with a DJ. The flexibility really allows us to experiment and try new things.
Billy the Kidd (E.F.): We each worked with a lot of other great artists, but -ultimately- they didn't share our individual visions. Some of those artists were mutual friends and we connected through some of them and I guess musical sparks went off. LOL In me, Nick saw a musician who wasn't scared to be "out there" and I saw a rapper who had the lyrical prowess and elevated mindset to lay verses over beats that aren't very typical.
