McPhils debut LP, “Safer than a known way” released
October 2, 2012
Nigerian-born Olumuyiwa Olutosin Ajayi (-Philips) took a curious path on his way to a career in music. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in computer programming, he wanted more. So he earned a master’s degree. That wasn’t enough. He’s now pursuing a doctorate. But at the same time, an introduction to the music of artists like Jay-Z and Common album gave him another kind of hunger, and now he’s putting that energy into earning a degree in hip hop.
His philosophy defines rap as “speaking your mind in creative assertiveness,” and that’s exactly what he does on every single track.
Now known as McPhils, he recorded the tracks for his debut album, “Safer than a known way” using rhymes he composed completely in his head during breaks while working as a computer programmer. He writes nothing down, a lesson learned after losing all his notebooks in an accident. Now nothing can stop McPhils.
Similarly, the whole album was recorded in only two days, lending a sense of raw urgency to every track. Coupled with old-school club beats with an infectiousness that cannot be denied, and you have a stunning debut album.
Common, Scarface and 9th wonder had a big influence on McPhils, and it shows in his lyrical style. The album is full of club-ready hits that boom and resonate with raw talent that takes full advantage of McPhils’ flexible rhymes.
Tracks like “Take a Letter” demonstrate McPhils’ ability to deliver rapid-fire rhymes as precise as a smart bomb, while “Elewa” show McPhils flowing laconically, but no less powerfully. “Dog in a Manger” offers an African-inspired beat that demands your attention and offers a glimpse into McPhils’ background.
Politics, relationships, music, culture, religion…no topic is off-limits for this MC, and he handles them all deftly. His years of focus have given McPhils the will and focus to program his own future, and “Safer than a known way” is the first step.
