The track (prod. !llMind) explores a duplicity that exists within us all. Sometimes we feel invincible, and other times we feel invisible. The song and video act as an internal dialogue in which the notion of staying true to oneself emerges as the most harmonious option. It turns out that a battle within us only does damage to ourselves.

This is the third release off of Jesse Abraham’s I Am Water album, scheduled for a fall 2012 release. 100% of the proceeds from the album will go towards bringing safe, clean drinking water to developing countries via the non-profit organization Charity Water. The previous two singles were only available for purchase, but this most recent song is up for free download at his Bandcamp page: http://bit.ly/PlL48a

JA took some time to tell us a few details about the making of the song, in his own words:

When !llmind sends over a batch of beats, it’s always a bittersweet moment. Can I use all 50 of them? Please? Ha no, no I cannot. I have to pass on some of them, and that’s agonizing. But this one beat called Showstarter spoke to me immediately. I threw it on my iPod and headed out into a rainy fall Brooklyn afternoon, listening to it on repeat. For some reason the phrases that eventually became the title of the song kept popping out of my mouth as I was listening to the beat, walking around the city.
The next day I headed to the studio, which means I take the L train to Broadway Junction, hop on the J train and ride it to the last stop in Queens, then sit on a bus for another half hour. The whole time I’m listening to this beat just mumbling to myself, “I ain’t shit…I’m the shit.” What was I talking about? It struck me – here I was in the midst of a two-hour journey, being charioted through my city by the glory of my MetroCard. My hoodie was damp from the rain and my shoelaces were getting trampled on, but by $20 Sony headphones were blasting some beauty. I was on my way to go record my thoughts, with the intention of having people, lots of people, listen intently to them later. Heads care enough to hear me rhyme about my life and my ideas? I’m just a dude amongst millions, but for some reason I feel worthy of sharing my ideas to those millions in the form of music. The contrast struck me as amusing…I immediately took out my phone and started writing the song. “I find it odd that I’ve been awed…”
